Reserve 'The Mayor' 2021
On the far side of the Coromandel Peninsula lies Mayor Island, home to New Zealand's largest natural source of obsidian. Fragments of this volcanic glass were discovered during the development of the Obsidian Vineyard, creating a tangible connection between the islands.

The Mayor is our Bordeaux-inspired blend that honours Cabernet Franc, the noble parent variety from which the other principal Bordeaux grapes originated. In recognition of its heritage and importance, Cabernet Franc forms approximately 50% of the blend.

Our Reserve wine celebrates the story of Cabernet Franc through a dark-fruited and finely structured expression. Notes of blackberry, sandalwood, and dark chocolate form the foundation of the wine's character. Given Cabernet Franc's naturally elegant and aromatic nature, Petit Verdot is incorporated to provide additional structure, depth, and concentration, while Malbec contributes savoury complexity and layered richness.

The naturally low yields of the 2021 vintage intensified the expression of each variety, producing lifted aromas of sour cherry, wild herbs, and baked fruits. To integrate and harmonise these elements, a carefully measured 8% new American oak was employed, providing balance and subtle support without overshadowing the wine's varietal identity.

The result is a wine of poise and complexity, reflecting both the origins of Cabernet Franc and the distinctive character of Waiheke Island.
