The Obsidian is our tribute to the origins of the Waiheke Island wine industry and its long-standing connection to Bordeaux varietals. This traditional blend honours the Left Bank style while expressing the unique character of Waiheke's terroir.

Only the finest parcels are selected for this Cabernet-led blend, crafted with the ambition of showcasing the graceful maturation potential of Cabernet Sauvignon. While some wines are made to be enjoyed young, Merlot and Cabernet Franc play essential roles in shaping the wine's structure, supporting the Cabernet, and adding complexity and approachability in its earlier years.

The 2020 El Niño weather system delivered a long, dry, and predictable summer, allowing the grapes extended time on the vine to develop flavour and concentration. These ideal conditions enabled a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the final blend.

Upon release, The Obsidian 2020 displays black fruit and olive characters that are beginning to soften and evolve. Notes of charred oak and tobacco box are becoming increasingly evident, while an enticing capsicum and subtle chilli character emerges across the mid-palate. The wine balances power and elegance, offering both immediate enjoyment and the promise of further development with cellaring.
